UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF HIERARCHICAL DYNAMICS ON SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE OF LGBT TROOPS IN MILITARY INSTITUTIONS

4 min read Trans

How do hierarchical dynamics within units influence social acceptance of LGBT soldiers?

The integration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) personnel into military forces has been one of the most pressing issues for militaries around the world. Over the past few decades, these forces have implemented policies to ensure that they create an environment where their members are treated equally regardless of their sexual orientation.

It is evident that despite the efforts made by these institutions, some sections of society still view LGBT individuals negatively due to the presence of prejudice, stigma, and stereotypes. The article discusses how unit dynamics can affect the social acceptance of LGBT troops and the measures that military institutions should take to deal with this problem.

The history of homosexuality in the military dates back to ancient times when same-sex relationships were widely accepted among warriors during battlefield activities. In recent years, however, there has been a significant shift in attitudes towards homosexuals as nations increasingly recognize their rights. It is worth mentioning that military organizations such as Britain's Royal Navy and Canada's armed forces led the way by allowing openly LGBT persons to serve long before other countries did. Nonetheless, the debate over whether or not to allow homosexuals to serve in the military has persisted in many parts of the world, especially in countries with conservative values.

Israel lifted its ban on LGBT servicepeople in 1992 after several years of public debate while Saudi Arabia has yet to legalize any form of same-sex activity. Similarly, although the US President Obama signed a law repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT) in December 2010, the Pentagon implemented it in September 2011, but only after a great deal of controversy surrounding the matter.

Hierarchical Dynamics in Military Units

In most militaries around the globe, soldiers are grouped into units consisting of different ranks ranging from junior personnel all the way up to senior officers. The hierarchy within these groups plays an essential role in determining how they interact with each other both at work and away from work. When troops come together for training or deployment missions, the hierarchy influences how they communicate, socialize, and even form relationships. Therefore, the hierarchical dynamics can significantly impact how they view individuals who identify themselves as LGBT. To illustrate this point, let us consider the example of two units: one composed of heterosexual personnel and another made up of mixed sexual orientations. The latter is likely to be more accepting of LGBT members because their interactions do not necessarily revolve around sexual orientation. On the contrary, they would focus on professionalism and the need to accomplish assigned tasks effectively.

In the former unit where there may be little interaction between junior and senior personnel, senior officers might find it hard to understand the struggles that LGBT servicepeople go through due to limited opportunities for discussion. This could create tension among them when some decide to 'come out' openly about their sexuality.

Measures to Promote Social Acceptance

To promote social acceptance of LGBT troops, military institutions should take various measures such as:

* Educating troops on non-discrimination policies - this includes educating new recruits and existing personnel on the importance of treating everyone equally regardless of their sexual orientation

* Training leaders on how to handle issues related to diversity - leadership training should emphasize the fact that all soldiers are human beings and that every person deserves respect irrespective of their gender identity or sexual preferences

* Creating a support system for LGBT servicepeople – support systems should include counseling services, confidential reporting mechanisms, and other resources that help them deal with challenges associated with being an LGBT soldier

* Ensuring equal treatment for all personnel – this means that every soldier should receive equal benefits and privileges regardless of their gender identity or sexual preference

* Establishing an LGBT advisory committee – this will allow LGBT soldiers to contribute ideas on how the institution can improve its policies towards them

Hierarchical dynamics within units have significant implications on the social acceptance of LGBT servicepeople in the military. Although most militaries nowadays recognize the need to integrate members of the LGBT community into their ranks, there is still work to be done to ensure that they do not face discrimination due to prejudice and stereotypes from colleagues who may not understand their struggles. Military organizations should implement various measures outlined above to promote social acceptance among personnel while at the same time ensuring that LGBT soldiers receive equal rights and privileges as heterosexual individuals.

Pride month is observed annually in June to honor and celebrate members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community and their supporters. The celebration has been marked with pride parades, rallies, and other events since 1970 in cities across the globe. It was initially created as a way for the LGBTQ+ community to advocate for equality and recognition after years of oppression.
