SEXUALITY AND GENDER IDENTITY: LGBTQ+ INDIVIDUALS STRATEGIES FOR OVERCOMING DISCRIMINATION

2 min read Queer

LGBTQ+ individuals face various challenges and discrimination from society due to their sexual orientation and gender identity. This discrimination can lead to feelings of isolation, depression, low self-esteem, and anxiety, which are collectively referred to as "internalized homophobia" or "internalized transphobia."

Some LGBTQ+ individuals have developed cognitive strategies to cope with these negative emotions and maintain healthy self-esteem.

One such strategy is affirmative cognition. This involves actively reminding oneself of positive attributes associated with one's sexuality or gender identity, such as pride in being queer, resilience, acceptance of difference, and authenticity. Another strategy is social comparison, where LGBTQ+ people compare themselves favorably to others who share similar identities but may be more accepted by society.

A gay person might think, "At least I am not as closeted as that famous politician who just got caught cheating on his wife." These comparisons can help boost confidence and reduce feelings of shame.

Another strategy is distancing, where LGBTQ+ people distance themselves emotionally from the source of stigma. They may avoid watching TV shows with anti-gay storylines, unfollowing homophobic social media accounts, or even moving to a more accepting community. By doing so, they limit exposure to harmful messages and experiences that could reinforce negative stereotypes about their identity.

Self-acceptance is also an important cognitive strategy for maintaining self-esteem. LGBTQ+ individuals who accept their sexuality and gender identity tend to experience fewer symptoms of internalized homophobia or transphobia than those who do not. Acceptance means recognizing that one's identity is valid and valuable regardless of societal norms. It requires effort, introspection, and sometimes therapy, but it leads to greater emotional well-being and self-compassion.

Developing these strategies takes time, practice, and support from family, friends, and professionals.

By challenging negative thoughts and beliefs about their identities, LGBTQ+ individuals can overcome internalized stigma and achieve greater self-esteem, empowerment, and pride in being true to themselves.
