Researchers at Queen's University Belfast studied more than 1,200 men aged 65 to 80 years old and found that those who had sex less than once per week were twice as likely to die from any cause compared to those who had sex three times per week or more frequently. The study also showed that frequent sexual activity was linked to lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other markers of heart health.

Having sex regularly increases blood flow throughout the body, including to the heart. When you have sex, your heart rate increases, and so does blood circulation. Over time, this increased blood flow strengthens the walls of your arteries and makes them less stiff. Regular exercise can achieve a similar effect, but sex provides an added benefit since it engages all parts of the body simultaneously. Additionally, during orgasm, the brain releases chemicals that relax muscles, reduce stress, and trigger the release of hormones that increase immune functioning.

The researchers also found that men who reported having sex at least two times per week were less likely to develop erectile dysfunction (ED), which is a risk factor for heart disease. ED can be caused by damage to blood vessels due to poor cardiovascular health. Thus, treating ED early may prevent future heart problems.

Another study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine revealed that women who had regular sex were less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease. Women with a history of heart attacks were even more likely to have improved symptoms when they resumed sexual activity after their illnesses.

There are several ways to improve cardiovascular health through regular sexual intercourse. Firstly, schedule time for intimacy with your partner every week. Secondly, engage in foreplay before intercourse to get aroused and enhance physical stimulation. Thirdly, take care of your overall health by eating well, exercising regularly, managing stress, and avoiding smoking. Finally, use contraception if necessary.

While some people worry about performance anxiety or other issues related to sex, these concerns are often exaggerated.
