EXPERIENCE SOCIAL EXCLUSION? HERES WHY YOU SHOULD NOT FEEL ALONE IN YOUR STRUGGLE FOR ACCEPTANCE

2 min read Lesbian

LGBTQ+ people have been historically marginalized by their heteronormative societies, which often leads to discrimination, violence, and harassment. As a result, many of them experience chronic social isolation, which has long-lasting psychological consequences. Chronic social isolation can lead to anxiety, depression, self-harming behavior, substance abuse, suicidal ideation, and even suicide attempts among LGBTQ+ adolescents and adults.

Social exclusion is defined as being left out of social interactions or activities that are available to others. It can take different forms, such as verbal bullying or physical violence. Stigmatization refers to negative stereotypes about an individual's identity, which may be expressed through hostility or prejudice. Both phenomena negatively affect mental health because they create feelings of rejection, loneliness, and low self-esteem. Research shows that individuals who experience prolonged social isolation have higher levels of cortisol, a stress hormone linked to inflammation and cardiovascular disease. They also tend to have lower immune system responses, making them more susceptible to illnesses.

Prolonged social isolation increases the risk of cognitive decline and early death due to reduced brain activity.

Long-term effects of chronic social exclusion include an increased likelihood of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD involves flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, and extreme emotional distress following traumatic events. LGBTQ+ people who suffer from discrimination, harassment, or physical violence often develop PTSD symptoms that persist for years afterward. Another long-term effect of chronic social exclusion is the development of anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders involve excessive worry, fear, and apprehension about future events. They can significantly impair daily functioning and quality of life.

Long-term social exclusion has been associated with depression and other mood disorders. Depressive symptoms include sadness, hopelessness, lack of motivation, and decreased interest in activities once enjoyed. They can lead to suicidal ideation and attempts.

To reduce the psychological impact of chronic social exclusion, it is essential to provide support services for marginalized communities. Support groups, counseling sessions, and therapy are vital resources for individuals experiencing social isolation and stigmatization. Schools and workplaces should create a safe space for LGBTQ+ students and employees. Anti-bullying policies and anti-discrimination laws protect vulnerable populations from harassment and violence.

Allies must speak out against bigotry and promote inclusivity. By working together, we can reduce the prevalence of chronic social exclusion and its devastating effects on mental health.
