The vagina is an organ located in women's bodies that serves to receive semen during intercourse. It has a thick mucous membrane called "vaginal epithelium" which covers its walls from inside and protects it from various bacterial infections. Desquamation refers to the periodic loss of cells from the skin surface or mucous membranes such as the vagina. In this case, vaginal cells are replaced every 28 days on average - just like any other cellular tissue in the body. This process involves several steps:

First, old cells detach from the basal layer of the vaginal epithelium, where new ones are formed. Second, they travel upward through the superficial layers until they reach the surface of the vagina. Third, they become sticky and stick together into clumps called "cell clusters." Finally, these clusters swell and burst releasing their contents onto the outside world. The entire cycle takes about four to six hours.

The purpose of desquamation is to remove dead cells and debris from the vaginal lining so it can be renewed with healthy new cells. If this process fails due to certain conditions, it can lead to an accumulation of dead cells, causing infections and other problems. For example, dryness, irritation, itching, pain during intercourse, and increased risk of STIs (sexually transmitted diseases).

To keep your vaginal lining healthy, there are several things you can do:

1. Wash daily with mild soap and water only. Avoid scented products which may cause irritation or disrupt the natural pH balance.

2. Use lubricants during sex to prevent friction injuries that break down the delicate tissues.

3. Take probiotics - live microorganisms that help maintain a balanced environment in the vagina. Yogurt contains Lactobacillus bacteria beneficial for women's health.

4. Eat a diet rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources. This will promote good digestion and support the immune system.

5. Exercise regularly. It helps improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to all body organs including the reproductive system.

6. Stay hydrated by drinking enough fluids throughout the day. Dehydration can cause dryness and make the epithelium more susceptible to damage.
