Sexual Activity May Lower Blood Pressure and Improve Cardiovascular Health
Research has shown that regular physical exercise is beneficial for heart health. But did you know that getting more physically active between the sheets can also be good for your ticker? According to a recent study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, having sex regularly can actually help to reduce blood pressure and improve overall cardiovascular health.
The study involved 21 women and 21 men who were all healthy but had high blood pressure. They participated in supervised sessions where they engaged in sexual activity with their partners twice a week for four weeks. At the end of the study period, participants saw an average decrease in systolic blood pressure of nearly 8 mmHg and diastolic pressure of almost 5 mmHg. This effect was still present even when researchers adjusted for factors like age, weight, smoking, and other lifestyle habits.
So why does sex seem to have such a positive impact on heart health? It turns out that the act of lovemaking involves multiple body systems working together, including muscle contraction, increased respiration, and increased heart rate and blood flow. In fact, it's estimated that just three minutes of vigorous physical exercise equals about two minutes of intercourse in terms of calories burned.
But what about the effects of sex on men? While not as clear-cut, there are studies suggesting that regular sexual activity may lower risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) and improve vascular function. For example, one meta-analysis found that ED patients who engaged in sexual activity at least once a month had better endothelial function than those who did not engage in any form of physical activity.
Of course, we shouldn't assume that getting more intimate is a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking are still key components of maintaining good cardiovascular health. However, adding some steaminess to your bedroom routine can definitely be part of a well-rounded approach to preventive care. So go ahead and enjoy yourself - your heart will thank you!
