SEXUAL PLEASURE AND FUNCTIONALITY IN AGING: A GUIDE FOR OLDER ADULTS TO ENJOY SATISFYING INTIMACY RU EN ES

Sexual pleasure and function

are not limited by age — many older adults have fulfilling sex lives.

The aging process is an unavoidable part of life that affects all aspects of human existence, including physical, mental, emotional, social, and relational functions such as sex. However, contrary to popular belief, older people can still enjoy a satisfying and gratifying sex life even if they are aged. This essay aims to explore why and how older individuals experience pleasurable and functional sex despite their advanced age.

Firstly, research shows that older people continue to express interest in sexual intimacy, which supports the idea that sex is more than just a biological activity that involves orgasm alone. For instance, studies conducted among people over the age of 60 years found that three out of four participants were satisfied with their sexual lives, while another study revealed that eighty percent of men and sixty percent of women in this age group reported satisfaction with their level of sexual desire (Hill & Rowland, 2018; Kashanian et al., 2019). These findings demonstrate that even though most elderly people may lose some sexual functions like libido, arousal or ejaculation/orgasm, they can still enjoy sexuality through alternative ways such as foreplay, kissing, touching, massage, or cuddling. Moreover, researchers believe that there is no absolute age for one's sexual capabilities since it varies from person to person depending on physiology, psychology, lifestyle, and other factors such as health status.

Secondly, medical interventions have made it possible for many seniors to improve their sex lives by treating diseases that affect sexual function such as diabetes, heart disease, depression, and cancer. Medications used in the treatment of these conditions alleviate symptoms and enhance physical well-being, allowing older adults to engage in satisfying sexual activities. Additionally, recent advancements in surgical techniques allow people to overcome impotence, vaginal dryness, and lack of lubrication. For example, penile implants replace erectile dysfunction (ED) by reconstructing a man's penis to achieve an erection when he feels aroused, whereas artificial lubricants are applied in the vagina during intercourse to increase pleasure. Other non-medical treatments include hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which replaces hormones lost due to aging with those that promote sexual desires and improve sensitivity. For instance, postmenopausal women benefit from HRT by experiencing increased libido and improved genital response to sexual stimuli.

Lastly, positive attitudes towards aging influence an elderly person's overall quality of life, including their sexual performance. Older people who value themselves positively report greater sexual satisfaction than those who do not. They also adopt healthy lifestyles by eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress levels through meditation or yoga. Furthermore, they build strong relationships with partners based on trust, communication, respect, intimacy, and affection. A study conducted among men over 70 years found that participants who engaged in social activities such as exercise clubs, cultural events, or art classes had higher self-esteem and reported more pleasurable sex compared to those who did not participate in any activities. It is, therefore, necessary for seniors to appreciate their abilities and seek support from friends, family members, and partners to enhance their sexual function.

In conclusion, research shows that age does not define one's sexuality since many older adults can still enjoy gratifying and pleasurable sex lives despite physical limitations. Physicians play a vital role in treating diseases that affect sexual functions while encouraging patients to maintain healthy lifestyles. Moreover, emotional wellness improves the quality of interpersonal relationships, which supports sexual fulfillment. Therefore, society should destigmatize sex among older individuals and encourage them to pursue it even if they are aged.
