SEXUAL SELFCONFIDENCE AS A BUFFER AGAINST SEXUAL ANXIETY, INHIBITION, AND RELATIONSHIP DISSATISFACTION enIT FR DE PL TR PT RU AR JA CN ES

According to researchers, individuals' sexual self-confidence can serve as an important protective factor against sexual anxiety, sexual inhibition, and relational dissatisfaction. It is hypothesized that sexual self-confidence may act as a buffer between sexual experience and its negative outcomes.

It remains unclear how this buffering mechanism works and whether it holds true for different types of sexual experiences.

To test these hypotheses, researchers conducted three studies involving undergraduate students. In Study 1, participants were assigned to one of four conditions based on their sexual self-confidence and sexual experience level. They completed measures assessing their sexual attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, including sexual anxiety, sexual inhibition, and relationship satisfaction. The results showed that sexual self-confidence played a protective role, reducing the impact of sexual experience on sexual anxiety, sexual inhibition, and relational dissatisfaction.

In Study 2, participants were again divided into high or low levels of sexual self-confidence.

They did not differ in terms of their sexual experience level. Participants were then asked to engage in a sexual encounter with a partner who was either highly attractive or less attractive than themselves. Again, sexual self-confidence played a buffering role, reducing the impact of both physical and emotional aspects of sexual experience on sexual anxiety, sexual inhibition, and relational dissatisfaction. Interestingly, the effect of sexual self-confidence was more pronounced for those who experienced greater physical arousal during the encounter.

In Study 3, participants were randomly assigned to receive either a positive or negative feedback about their sexual performance after completing a sexual task. As expected, individuals who received positive feedback reported higher sexual self-confidence and lower sexual anxiety compared to those who received negative feedback. This suggests that sexual self-confidence can be enhanced through social comparison and affirmative messages.

These findings suggest that sexual self-confidence may act as a buffer against the adverse effects of sexual experience by helping people regulate their responses to uncomfortable situations and maintain positive relationships. These findings have important implications for improving sexual health and well-being. Interventions aimed at boosting sexual self-confidence may be particularly beneficial for individuals struggling with sexual concerns.

Can sexual self-confidence buffer against sexual anxiety, inhibition, and relational dissatisfaction?

Sexual self-confidence refers to an individual's belief that they are attractive and capable of engaging in satisfying sexual activity with others. It can be influenced by various factors such as body image, past experiences, cultural norms, and personal values. Research suggests that people who have higher levels of sexual self-confidence tend to experience less anxiety, inhibition, and relational distress during sexual encounters compared to those who lack confidence.
