These situations can put immense pressure on a couple's bond and test their resilience and adaptability. Internal coping mechanisms play an essential role in how relational adaptability is developed during these times. Coping skills refer to ways individuals manage stressful events without affecting themselves or others negatively. Adaptability describes one's ability to adjust to changes quickly, easily, and successfully. Relational adaptability includes all aspects that contribute to the relationship's survival, stability, security, and sustainability. Therefore, internal coping strategies influence how couples deal with challenges, preserve their connection, strengthen it, and grow from them.

A study published in 2019 investigated the impact of coping styles on romantic relationships' quality. The researchers asked 354 participants about their coping methods for stressful life events (i.e., problem-focused, emotion-focused) and relationship factors (i.e., commitment, satisfaction). Results showed that problem-focused coping was positively related to relationship satisfaction but not commitment. Emotion-focused coping had no significant effect on either factor. Another study examined the role of positive and negative coping strategies in the context of interpersonal conflict resolution. Participants were categorized into four groups based on their coping methods – avoidance, suppression, acceptance, and active. The results indicated that couples who used positive coping skills handled conflicts better than those who used negative ones.

People who use avoidance tend to distance themselves from problems rather than face them head-on. This strategy can be detrimental to relationships as it prevents partners from addressing issues constructively and finding solutions together. Suppressors don't share their feelings or emotions, leading to communication breakdowns and misunderstandings. Active copers seek information and advice, engage in open dialogue, and find creative ways to solve conflicts. Acceptors acknowledge the existence of problems but try to work through them calmly without blaming each other. All these strategies are crucial for relational adaptability during challenges. Couples who communicate effectively, support each other, share ideas, listen actively, compromise, forgive mistakes, and show empathy can overcome difficulties faster and more efficiently.

External factors also impact relational adaptability.

Social isolation, family tension, financial struggles, mental health issues, substance abuse, infidelity, and violence affect relationships negatively. These circumstances test partners' resilience, compassion, patience, loyalty, trust, honesty, respect, and love. Coping with these events requires maturity, commitment, empathy, responsibility, understanding, collaboration, and mutual care. Partners need to identify what works best for them individually and collectively and put those techniques into practice consistently. They must learn how to manage stress, anxiety, anger, disappointment, hurt, fear, guilt, shame, sadness, and regret without hurting themselves or their partner. Relationships that foster internal coping mechanisms have a higher chance of surviving crises and thriving afterward.
