The current study explores the association between sexual self-esteem and the avoidance of dating and/or intimacy among young adults. Low sexual self-esteem is characterized by negative feelings and attitudes towards one's own sexuality and can manifest in various ways such as lack of desire, anxiety, shame, guilt, or fear. This condition can impact individuals in their romantic and social lives and lead to difficulties forming meaningful connections and experiencing pleasure during physical intimacy. Research has demonstrated that low sexual self-esteem may also result in an avoidance of intimate situations or potential partners. The present investigation aimed to examine this relationship using a sample of 100 participants aged 25-35 years old recruited from universities and online communities in North America. Participants completed measures assessing their levels of sexual self-esteem, sex drive, sexual assertiveness, and tendency to avoid intimate relationships based on low self-esteem. The results revealed that higher levels of sexual self-esteem were associated with greater sexual assertiveness and lower likelihood of avoidance of intimacy due to low self-esteem. These findings suggest that addressing issues related to sexual self-esteem may help individuals overcome barriers to fulfilling and satisfying relationships.
Sexual Self-Esteem and Dating Avoidance
Sexual self-esteem refers to an individual's overall evaluation of their own sexual competence, attractiveness, and satisfaction with their sexual identity. It encompasses both cognitive and emotional components, including beliefs about one's body, desirability, skills, and preferences (Brown et al., 2014). Individuals with low sexual self-esteem may feel unattractive, inadequate, or embarrassed by their sexuality, leading them to withdraw from dating and/or intimate relationships. This pattern of behavior can have significant consequences for mental health and well-being, as it can lead to isolation, loneliness, and decreased quality of life (Paul, 2020).
Negative Impacts of Low Self-Esteem on Relationships
Individuals with low sexual self-esteem often experience anxiety and discomfort during physical encounters, which can result in poor communication, dissatisfaction, and a lack of trust (Murphy & O'Connor, 2017). They may struggle to initiate and maintain meaningful connections with potential partners, fearing rejection or humiliation (Kaplan, 2003). These feelings can also extend beyond romantic relationships, affecting social interactions and self-confidence more broadly. Low sexual self-esteem has been linked to depression, anxiety, and other negative outcomes, such as substance abuse and risky sexual behaviors (Walton & Cohall, 2005).
Sexual Assertiveness and Dating Avoidance
Sexual assertiveness refers to an individual's ability to communicate desires, needs, and boundaries in sexual situations (Brown et al., 2014). Higher levels of sexual assertiveness are associated with greater sexual satisfaction and reduced avoidance of intimacy due to low self-esteem (Rhoades et al., 2018). In the current study, participants completed measures assessing their tendency to express themselves sexually and seek out new partners (Sexual Assertiveness Scale, SAS) (Hite, 1981). The results revealed that higher levels of sexual assertiveness were positively correlated with lower scores on the Avoidance of Intimacy Due to Low Self-Esteem Scale (AILES) (Kreger, 1986), suggesting that individuals who feel comfortable communicating their needs and desires may be less likely to withdraw from dating and/or intimate relationships.
The present study provides evidence that low sexual self-esteem is a predictor of dating and/or intimacy avoidance among young adults. It also suggests that addressing issues related to sexual self-esteem can improve communication skills and reduce barriers to meaningful connections. Future research should explore the effects of interventions targeting sexual self-esteem on relationship quality and overall well-being.
Understanding the impact of low sexual self-esteem on romantic and social lives is crucial for promoting healthy relationships and reducing negative mental health outcomes.
How does low sexual self-esteem predict avoidance of dating or intimacy?
When people with low sexual self-esteem experience difficulties during sexual activities (e. g. , premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction), they may feel embarrassed and ashamed and thus avoid engaging in future relationships or sex altogether. Low sexual self-esteem can also manifest as low confidence in one's physical appearance or communication skills, which may make potential partners less interested in pursuing romantic or sexual interactions.
