The purpose of this paper is to explore the ways in which the existing systems of knowledge production and dissemination have created an environment where queer narratives are consistently left out and marginalized. This issue is particularly relevant given the growing awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues and movements for social justice. It has become evident that the current structures of power and privilege are largely responsible for the continued marginalization of queer voices and experiences.
Structural Exclusion
Structurally speaking, queer narratives are often excluded from public discourse because they do not fit into traditional gender roles and expectations.
The family unit is generally seen as heteronormative, with a man and a woman raising children together. This creates a systemic barrier to the inclusion of nontraditional families, such as those headed by same-sex couples or single parents. Similarly, educational institutions tend to emphasize heterosexuality and cisgender identity, with little attention paid to the unique needs and perspectives of queer students. The media also tends to reinforce these biases through its portrayal of queer characters and stories.
Censorship
Another factor contributing to the exclusion of queer narratives is censorship. In many countries, homophobia and transphobia remain widespread, leading to laws and policies that criminalize or otherwise suppress queer expression. Power Dynamics
The power dynamics between dominant and marginalized groups also play a role in perpetuating systematic exclusion.
Heterosexual individuals may feel threatened by queer identity and seek to silence it through violence, intimidation, or other means. Similarly, cisgender individuals may deny the existence of gender nonconformity or argue that transgender people should simply "pass" as their assigned sex.
