The purpose of this study was to identify strategies that support adaptive coping and emotional regulation in military couples. Specifically, the researchers examined how communication styles, problem-solving skills, and shared activities influence the ability of military couples to cope with stressors related to deployment and reintegration. This is important because military deployments can be a source of significant stress for both partners and impact their relationship negatively if they do not effectively manage it. Therefore, understanding effective strategies for coping with these stressors may help improve the quality of life of military couples and reduce negative consequences on their relationship.
The researchers used a mixed-methods design with a sample of 20 active-duty military couples who were currently deployed or recently returned from deployment. The participants completed surveys assessing their communication styles, problem-solving skills, and shared activities during the deployment period. They also participated in semi-structured interviews about their experiences during the deployment and reintegration periods.
The results showed that military couples who engaged in more frequent communication and shared activities reported greater levels of coping and emotional regulation. In addition, those with higher levels of problem-solving skills tended to have better relationships than those without these skills. These findings suggest that communication and shared activities play an important role in supporting adaptive coping and emotional regulation in military couples.
One implication of this research is that military couples should engage in regular communication and shared activities to maintain positive coping and emotional regulation during deployment periods.
Developing problem-solving skills can help them navigate challenges and build resilience. Clinicians working with military families may benefit from incorporating communication training and problem-solving skill development into their treatment plans.
This study contributes to our understanding of how military couples cope with stressors related to deployment and reintegration. It highlights the importance of communication, problem-solving skills, and shared activities in promoting healthy coping and emotional regulation. Further research could explore other factors that impact coping and emotional regulation among military couples, such as social support and financial stability.
