Research shows that supervisors who engage in sexual relationships with subordinates face increased risk of legal action and public scrutiny (Davis, 2019), as well as the possibility of damaging relationships with other employees (Peterson & Simpson, 2016). As such, many organizations have implemented policies against intimate relationships between managers and their direct reports (Maurer et al., 2018).

These regulations do not always prevent sexual activity from occurring, and when they do, they can lead to a sense of fear and mistrust within teams, particularly if there is no clear resolution process for addressing complaints or disputes (Chancellor, 2020).

Some studies suggest that hierarchical power dynamics may play a role in shaping employee perceptions of acceptable sexual behavior, leading them to question whether certain actions are appropriate in a professional setting (Klein & Shalley, 2014). This support can take many forms, such as providing advice on navigating office politics or offering to cover for a partner during a crisis.
