Gender identity is an essential part of one's sense of self that includes various aspects such as how people identify themselves based on their gender characteristics and roles in society. Sexual orientation refers to one's emotional, romantic, and sexual attraction towards other individuals. It encompasses various concepts including homosexuality, bisexuality, heterosexuality, and more. Many studies have found that gender and sexuality are deeply interconnected in terms of social norms and expectations. Thus, it is crucial for students to develop awareness about these issues. Accordingly, education interventions focusing on gender and sexuality can play a significant role in shaping student perceptions and behaviors toward LGBTQ communities.
The effectiveness of such interventions remains controversial due to several factors. In this essay, I will examine how gender and sexuality educational interventions affect students' understanding, empathy, and behavioral responses toward LGBTQ communities by exploring relevant literature and discussing implications for future research.
The purpose of gender and sexuality education is to create knowledgeable, inclusive environments where everyone feels safe, accepted, and valued regardless of their identities. Gender and sexuality educators must consider different perspectives and backgrounds when designing curricula to avoid alienation or exclusion. One study found that gender-neutral terminology in health education classes improved gay and lesbian students' academic performance and reduced bullying (Parks et al., 2018). Such approaches promote equity and reduce stigma. Another study revealed that students who participated in an LGBTQ-focused course reported increased empathy and respect for their peers with non-heteronormative sexual orientations (Hughes et al., 2021). These findings suggest that gender and sexuality education positively impact students' attitudes toward LGBTQ individuals.
