BISEXUALS ARE FINDING FREEDOM THROUGH NONBINARY GENDER EXPRESSION AND AFFIRMATIVE RELATIONSHIPS

3 min read Bisexual

To be bisexual is to live within the space between binary gender norms, where one's attraction extends beyond heteronormativity and homonormativity. Yet, even as society grows more accepting of non-binary genders and non-traditional relationship structures, bisexuals are still viewed as promiscuous and confused by many people. They often face unique challenges regarding identity expression and representation, including being told they "choose" their sexual orientation, facing pressure to pick either heterosexual or gay/lesbian identities, and struggling to find community that affirms them fully. This leaves bisexual individuals feeling isolated and invisible, but it does not have to be this way. With effort, bisexuals can cultivate authenticity within spaces that demand conformity, allowing them to express their full selves while remaining safe and comfortable.

The journey toward self-acceptance begins with understanding that there is no one definition of what it means to be bisexual. Some bisexuals prefer to date those who identify as transgender, intersex, or agender. Others may identify primarily with a different term than bisexual. Still others may engage in polyamory, open relationships, monogamy, kink, BDSM, or other forms of consensual intimacy that do not fit into traditional models of romantic love. Bisexual identities manifest differently for each person and should be respected accordingly.

Bisexuals must learn how to advocate for themselves without shame. It can be difficult to stand up against biphobia when friends, family members, or coworkers use harmful stereotypes about bisexuality to discredit an individual's experience. But bisexuals can speak out by calling out biphobic language and refusing to participate in conversations that belittle bisexuals. They can also educate people about the history of bisexual erasure and promote awareness of bisexual issues on social media platforms such as Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, etc.

Bisexuals should seek out supportive communities where they feel accepted and supported. This could include joining local LGBT+ groups, attending Pride parades, and connecting with online groups dedicated to bisexual representation.

Bisexuals need to prioritize self-care. This includes practicing mindfulness techniques like meditation or yoga to reduce stress levels, maintaining healthy diets and exercise routines to improve physical well-being, and seeking professional help from therapists trained in working with bisexual clients if necessary. It may also involve setting boundaries around relationships and communication styles so that bisexuals do not have to compromise their authenticity for the sake of acceptance. By taking care of oneself physically and emotionally, bisexuals will cultivate resilience and strength that empowers them to live openly and authentically within spaces that demand conformity.

Being bisexual is a beautiful and complicated identity that deserves respect and recognition. Through education, advocacy, and self-care, bisexuals can cultivate authenticity despite external pressures to be something other than themselves.

How do bisexual individuals cultivate authenticity in spaces that demand conformity?

Bisexual people face unique challenges when it comes to expressing their sexual orientation authentically due to the pressure they often experience from society to conform to either heterosexual or homosexual identities. This can lead to feelings of confusion and self-doubt, as well as social isolation. Bisexual people may feel like they need to hide their true selves for fear of judgment or exclusion.
