We will define marginalization as the process by which an individual or group becomes excluded from power structures and decision-making processes within society due to their identity, background, or beliefs. This can lead to feelings of isolation, fear, and anger that can manifest themselves in physical and emotional forms. For LGBTQ+ youth specifically, marginalization can take many forms - from being bullied at school to facing discrimination at home.

Marginalized LGBTQ+ youth are at higher risk for anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, and other mental health issues than their heterosexual peers. The stigma associated with queerness often leads to low self-esteem, difficulty forming relationships, and poor academic performance. By providing safe spaces where they can express themselves freely without fear of judgment, however, educators can help mitigate some of these negative outcomes.
