Leaders are often depicted as powerful individuals who command respect and influence others. They may also be seen as strong, decisive, confident, and capable of making difficult choices.

Research shows that sexualization can undermine these qualities by emphasizing physical appearance over other attributes.

Some studies suggest that people tend to judge politicians based on their looks rather than their policies when presented with pictures of them wearing swimsuits versus business suits (Ladha et al., 2014). Similarly, advertising that features scantily clad models has been found to increase purchases but decrease product quality ratings (Puccinelli & Goodwin, 1986).

This can create barriers for both men and women seeking power, leading to fewer opportunities overall and greater inequality within organizations.

Sexualization can influence charisma, which is the ability to inspire loyalty and admiration among followers. Charismatic leaders are seen as passionate, enthusiastic, and empathetic individuals who motivate others to achieve goals through their personality traits rather than formal authority (Conger & Kanungo, 1987; Bass, 1990).
