BISEXUALITY: CHALLENGING BINARY THINKING WHILE OVERCOMING STIGMA AND MISCONCEPTIONS IN A HETERONORMATIVE SOCIETY

2 min read Bisexual

Bisexuality is often misunderstood and stigmatized because it challenges traditional ideas about gender and sexuality. The language of "choice" and "preference" can lead to misinterpretations that deny the validity of bisexuality as an identity. In this article, I will explore how the binary language of heterosexual/homosexual and male/female distorts public understanding of bisexuality and perpetuates harmful stereotypes.

Binary Thinking

The language of binary thinking, where things are divided into opposing categories such as black/white, male/female, or straight/gay, has shaped the way society views sexual orientation. This binary system assumes there are only two options for sexual attraction, which excludes nonbinary identities like bisexuality.

Bisexuals experience attractions beyond these binaries, making their identities difficult to categorize. When people believe bisexuality is a choice rather than an intrinsic part of one's identity, they view bisexuality as immoral, deceitful, promiscuous, or temporary. These beliefs contribute to stigma and discrimination against bisexuals.

Bisexual Identity

Despite its history and prevalence, bisexuality remains marginalized within LGBTQ+ communities. Many bisexuals feel alienated from both gay and straight cultures, leading to isolation and lack of support. This stems in part from the assumption that bisexuality is unstable and confusing, often due to the notion that bisexuals "can't make up their minds." In reality, bisexuality reflects fluidity and diversity of attraction, rather than indecision or disloyalty.

Many bisexuals face internal conflict over their desires, but this does not invalidate their identity.

Gender Roles

Bisexuality challenges traditional gender roles by acknowledging the existence of same-sex desire outside of heteronormative relationships. This can be threatening to cisgender individuals who prioritize strict adherence to gender norms. When bisexuals express attraction to people of multiple genders, it blurs the lines between male/female distinctions, which some find uncomfortable. This leads to assumptions that bisexuals are promiscuous or unable to commit to monogamy, despite research showing no significant difference in relationship satisfaction between bisexuals and other sexual orientations.

The language of choice and preference reinforces harmful stereotypes about bisexuality as an immoral or temporary phase. By embracing a more expansive understanding of sexual orientation and respecting the validity of bisexual identities, we can challenge binary thinking and promote acceptance for all sexual orientations. Only then will we truly achieve equality and inclusion for all members of society.

How does the language of “choice” and “preference” distort public understanding of bisexuality as an identity?

Language is powerful, and its usage can have far-reaching consequences on the perception of people's identities. In the case of bisexuals, the terms "choice" and "preference" are often used to downplay their sexuality. These words suggest that one's sexual orientation is simply a matter of personal preference rather than a fundamental aspect of one's identity.
