WHAT ARE THE GUIDELINES FOR SEXUALLY EXPLICIT CONTENT IN MUNIS ADVERTS? RU EN ES

San Francisco's public transportation system, known as Muni, has a strict policy regarding advertisements that appear within its fleet. According to this policy, any advertisement deemed too controversial can be rejected from displaying in their buses, trains, and stations. One such example was Larry Flynt's Hustler magazine ads promoting his infamous pornographic publications. This led to an intense debate between those who believed it was an attack on freedom of expression and those who argued that it was necessary for maintaining public decency. In the end, the ban was upheld, and San Francisco remained one of the few cities in the world where Hustler could not legally advertise within the city limits. The ban started back in the late '90s when Muni received several complaints about explicit imagery appearing on public transit. As a result, they put together a task force to review all advertising materials before approving them for display. After much deliberation, Muni decided to create guidelines for what types of images would be allowed on their vehicles and stations. Advertisements containing nudity or sexual acts were banned outright, while those depicting violence or drugs were also prohibited. Additionally, advertisements that promoted racism, bigotry, or religious intolerance were banned. Larry Flynt disagreed with these restrictions and filed a lawsuit against Muni, claiming that the ban violated his right to free speech. He argued that adults should have the right to view whatever material they want without fear of censorship. However, the courts sided with Muni, stating that the ban did not infringe upon any constitutional rights. Despite this ruling, Flynt continued to push for changes in Muni's policy, arguing that they were acting as moral arbiters by rejecting his ads. Today, Flynt is still fighting for his right to promote his publications in San Francisco's public spaces, but he has yet to find success.
