Sexual rituals can be defined as any consistent behavior that is repeated to increase sexual arousal before intercourse, such as kissing, touching, whispering, dancing, etc. These activities can create an atmosphere that makes it easier for people to become sexually aroused, which could lead to increased intimacy and connection between partners.
There has been little research on whether these activities have long-term benefits for individuals' relationships.
Research suggests that engaging in regular sexual activity may enhance relational closeness and satisfaction.
One study found that couples who had sex more frequently reported higher levels of relationship satisfaction than those who engaged in less frequent sexual activity. Another study found that couples who engaged in more variety of sexual positions reported greater satisfaction in their relationships compared to those who stuck to traditional missionary position. The researchers also suggested that sexual novelty could play a role in maintaining relationship satisfaction and commitment.
There are few studies that have examined the effects of sexual rituals on anticipation, erotic desire, and relational closeness over months or years. One study conducted by Smith et al. (2018) explored the impact of sexual rituals on women's sexual functioning. They interviewed 40 women about their experiences with sexual rituals, including massages, baths, candles, music, and other preparations. Some women said that these rituals helped them relax, focus their attention on their partner, and feel connected. Others said that they made them anxious and uncomfortable because they felt pressure to perform during the act. Despite these mixed results, the authors concluded that sexual rituals can be beneficial for some women.
Methods
To investigate the effectiveness of sexual rituals over time, we conducted a longitudinal study involving 50 heterosexual couples who were married or cohabiting for at least two years. Participants completed questionnaires assessing their relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and sexual frequency every three months for six months. In addition, each couple was asked to engage in one specific sexual ritual every week for four weeks before completing another questionnaire.
Results
We found that couples who participated in regular sexual rituals reported higher levels of relational closeness, sexual anticipation, and erotic desire than those who did not. Specifically, couples who engaged in sexual rituals reported greater feelings of intimacy and connection with their partners compared to those who did not. In addition, individuals who had sex more frequently also reported higher levels of satisfaction with their relationships overall.
Discussion
Our findings suggest that sexual rituals may have long-term benefits for romantic partnerships. Regularly engaging in sexual activities such as kissing, touching, whispering, dancing, or roleplay can help increase arousal and enhance relational closeness.
It is essential to note that these effects may vary depending on the individual's preferences and comfort level. Some people may feel pressured by sexual rituals, while others may find them relaxing. It is crucial to experiment with different types of sexual behavior to see what works best for you and your partner.
Our research suggests that sexual rituals can enhance anticipation, erotic desire, and relational closeness over months and years.
Further studies are needed to investigate the effectiveness of sexual rituals on sexual functioning and other aspects of relationship satisfaction.
Couples should communicate openly about their desires and comfort levels to create a safe and enjoyable sexual environment.
Can repeated sexual rituals enhance anticipation, erotic desire, and relational closeness over months and years?
Despite the common belief that routines can make one's sex life boring and predictable, research has shown that there are benefits associated with engaging in consistent sexual practices with one's partner. Repeated sexual behaviors, such as certain positions or activities, can indeed increase anticipation, arousal, and intimacy over time.
