Some researchers believe that it may be a way for the body to prepare for potential mating opportunities during the day. In addition to testosterone and REM-related brain activity, other factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, medications, and medical conditions may also contribute to morning wood. For example, men who take antidepressants may experience increased morning wood. While morning wood is a natural phenomenon, it should not be taken lightly as it can indicate underlying health issues.
