SEXUAL SATISFACTION: A KEY FACTOR IN MARRIAGE QUALITY AND FAMILY COHESION enIT FR DE PL PT RU AR JA CN ES

Sexual satisfaction is an important component of happiness and well-being that affects both individuals and their families. Research has shown that sexual satisfaction can buffer individuals against negative effects of stressors such as work demands, financial difficulties, and relationship problems. In contrast, lack of sexual satisfaction may lead to decreased marital quality and increased divorce rates.

Family cohesion, which refers to the degree of closeness and support among family members, has been found to be positively associated with mental health outcomes including depression and life satisfaction.

Little research has examined the mediating role of sexual satisfaction in this association.

To explore the potential mediating effect of sexual satisfaction on the relationship between life stressors and family cohesion, we conducted a longitudinal study using data from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) collected in the United States. Participants were married or cohabiting couples who completed surveys every year for three years. The measures used included stressful life events (e.g., job loss), family cohesion (e.g., closeness to family members), and sexual satisfaction (e.g., frequency of sexual activity).

Our findings showed that higher levels of sexual satisfaction were associated with greater family cohesion and overall happiness, even after accounting for stressful life events. Specifically, when participants experienced more stressful life events, those with high levels of sexual satisfaction reported stronger family cohesion and greater happiness compared to those with low levels of sexual satisfaction. This suggests that sexual satisfaction may serve as a buffer against the negative impact of stressors on family functioning and individual well-being.

Our results highlight the importance of sexual satisfaction for both individuals and their families, and underscore the need for interventions that promote sexual satisfaction and family cohesion.

Couples therapy can help couples improve communication and intimacy, which in turn may lead to increased sexual satisfaction and improved family cohesion.

Policies that support work-life balance and financial stability may reduce stressors that negatively impact sexual satisfaction and family cohesion. By promoting sexual satisfaction and family cohesion, such interventions can enhance overall happiness and well-being for individuals and their families.

Can sexual satisfaction mediate the impact of life stressors on family cohesion and overall happiness?

It is possible that increased sexual satisfaction can mitigate the negative effects of life stressors on family cohesion and overall happiness, but this requires further research. Firstly, it is essential to understand how life stressors may impact family dynamics and relationships. Stressful situations such as financial difficulties, health problems, job loss, or relationship issues can have adverse effects on family members' feelings of connectedness, trust, and support.
