The body's response to stress involves a cascade of physiological changes, including elevated heart rate, increased blood pressure, and decreased immune function, which can lead to a decrease in sexual desire and arousal. Research has found that women who experienced greater levels of stress were more likely to report lower levels of sexual desire and satisfaction compared to those who did not (Fisher et al., 2018). Similarly, men who reported higher levels of perceived stress also had reduced sexual desire, erectile function, orgasm quality, and overall sexual enjoyment (Goldstein et al., 2015). These findings highlight the importance of addressing both physical and emotional wellbeing when treating patients with sexual concerns.

Fatigue is another common issue that can contribute to sexual dysfunction, particularly among people with chronic medical conditions or who are experiencing high levels of stress. Fatigue can result in a lack of energy and motivation, making it difficult to engage in sexual activity.

One study found that cancer survivors who reported fatigue were less likely to be sexually active than those without fatigue (Kelly et al., 2017). In addition to physical factors, mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety may also play a role in fatigue-related sexual difficulties by causing feelings of low self-esteem, hopelessness, and lack of interest in intimacy (Amin et al., 2019).

Mental health challenges such as bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, and schizophrenia can have unique effects on sexual functioning. Women with postpartum depression, for instance, may experience changes in libido and arousal during pregnancy and after giving birth due to hormonal shifts and sleep deprivation (Lefkowitz & Shifren, 2018). Individuals with bipolar disorder may experience fluctuations in mood and energy levels that impact their ability to initiate and maintain sexual encounters (Bell et al., 2016). Schizophrenia has been associated with lower sexual desire and satisfaction in both men and women, which may be related to medication side effects or cognitive impairment (Khan et al., 2015). Treating these conditions can help improve sexual functioning through medication management, therapy, and supportive interventions.

Life stressors, fatigue, and mental health challenges can all contribute to sexual dysfunction, and understanding the complex interactions between these factors is essential for effective treatment. Addressing psychological distress, improving lifestyle habits, and working with medical professionals can help individuals achieve greater sexual wellbeing. Further research is needed to better understand how these variables interact and identify effective interventions for addressing sexual difficulties in diverse populations.
