Researchers have conducted extensive studies on the link between sexual orientation and relationship outcomes such as trust, closeness, and satisfaction.
Little is known about how these findings apply to individuals who identify outside of traditional gender binaries, including nonbinary, agender, and genderqueer individuals. This study aimed to explore the impact of self-reported sexual alignment on relational trust, emotional closeness, and long-term relational satisfaction among a diverse sample of individuals.
The study utilized a mixed methods approach involving both quantitative and qualitative data collection. Participants were recruited through online advertisements and social media platforms, with a total of n 200 individuals completing the survey. The survey consisted of multiple choice and Likert scale items measuring sexual identity, relational characteristics, and relationship history. The results revealed that participants who identified as nonbinary/genderqueer reported significantly lower levels of relational trust than those who identified as cisgender men or women.
Nonbinary/genderqueer individuals reported lower levels of emotional closeness compared to their cisgender counterparts. In terms of long-term relational satisfaction, no significant differences were observed across groups.
Qualitative interviews were also conducted with ten individuals who identified as nonbinary/genderqueer, and thematic analysis was used to analyze their responses. Themes emerged around the challenges of navigating heteronormative societal expectations, the importance of personal agency in relationships, and the need for greater understanding and acceptance within the LGBTQ+ community. Nonbinary/genderqueer individuals described feeling invalidated by partners and society at large due to their unique identities, leading to feelings of isolation and distrust.
They also expressed hope for more inclusive and accepting future relationships where they could be fully themselves without fear of judgment or rejection.
This study adds to our understanding of the complex link between sexual orientation and relationship outcomes. While previous research has focused primarily on cisgender populations, this study highlights the experiences of nonbinary/genderqueer individuals and suggests new directions for further research. By acknowledging and validating the needs of diverse communities, we can work towards creating more equitable and satisfying relationships for all.

There is an intricate relationship between sexual orientation and relational trust, emotional closeness, and long-term relational satisfaction. Studies show that individuals with different sexual orientations tend to have unique experiences regarding these factors. The most common finding is that homosexual individuals perceive less relational distrust from their partners than heterosexuals. This is due to greater social acceptance of same-sex relationships than opposite-sex ones.
