HOW MUSLIM QUEER INDIVIDUALS ARE CREATING SPIRITUAL SPACES TO RECONCILE THEIR IDENTITIES

2 min read Queer

Many Muslim queer individuals have been looking for ways to reconcile their identities as both faithful followers of Islam and members of LGBTQ+ communities. One way they are finding this is through creating spiritual spaces that affirm both faith and identity. These spaces can take many forms, from online groups and meetups to physical gatherings and retreats. They often include discussions about how to navigate the intersection between religious beliefs and sexual orientation/gender identity, as well as opportunities to pray together, share experiences, and build community. By coming together in these settings, Muslim queer individuals can find support, solidarity, and understanding from like-minded people who face similar challenges. In addition, some Muslim queer individuals may choose to create their own spiritual spaces within existing mosques or other religious institutions. This can involve working closely with leaders and congregations to make changes that accommodate diverse perspectives and practices.

It is up to each individual to decide what type of spiritual space works best for them; however, there are numerous options available to help facilitate this process.

One example of an organization that provides resources for Muslim queer individuals is Al-Fatiha Foundation. Founded in 1998 by Imam Daayiee Abdullah, it offers educational programs and events aimed at promoting acceptance and inclusion within the Muslim community. Another resource is Masjid al-Rabia, a virtual mosque led by Rabbi Sarah Kaminsky and Imam Zia Sheikh that welcomes all genders and orientations. Both organizations provide safe spaces for dialogue, prayer, worship, and social interaction among LGBTQ+ Muslims.

Some Muslim queer individuals may turn to traditional Islamic teachings for guidance on integrating faith and identity.

Many interpret Quranic verses as affirming same-sex relationships in a non-explicit way (i.e., using terms such as "goodness" and "righteousness"). Others emphasize the importance of following one's conscience and seeking forgiveness when necessary. Still, others focus on developing a personal relationship with God through contemplation and meditation regardless of sexual orientation/gender identity. There is no single path to reconciling these identities, but finding meaningful ways to express both can be empowering for those who seek it.

How do Muslim queer individuals find or create spiritual spaces that affirm both faith and identity?

The way Muslim queer individuals approach their spirituality is shaped by various factors such as cultural norms, religious teachings, personal beliefs, and social context. While many Muslim communities continue to stigmatize homosexuality and gender nonconformity, some have developed alternative approaches and interpretations of Islamic teachings to create spiritual spaces that affirm both faith and identity.
