HOW DOES RELIGION AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES? AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON LGBTQ TEENS

2 min read Lesbian

The effects of religion on mental health are well documented. In recent years, researchers have begun exploring how religious beliefs and experiences may influence the psychological well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth. One important factor is whether an individual's religious community actively condemns homosexuality or celebrates diversity. This study examines the impact of exposure to affirming versus non-affirming religious leaders on LGBTQ adolescent mental health outcomes.

Methodology

To conduct this study, researchers recruited 100 adolescents aged 14-18 who identified as LGBTQ and lived in a Christian faith tradition that explicitly condemned same-sex sexual activity. Participants were randomly assigned to either attend a church led by an openly accepting pastor who preached inclusivity or one headed by a traditionalist leader who discouraged discussion of sexuality. All participants received weekly therapy for eight weeks, but half also received weekly group counseling sessions where they could discuss their spiritual experiences with peers.

Results

After the intervention period, participants completed surveys measuring their level of depression, anxiety, stress, self-esteem, and social support. Analyzing these results revealed significant differences between groups. Those exposed to an affirming leader had lower rates of depression, anxiety, and stress than those exposed to a non-affirming leader. They also reported higher levels of self-esteem and stronger social connections. In addition, adolescents in the group counseling program demonstrated greater improvements in all measures compared to those without such support.

Discussion

These findings suggest that exposure to affirming religious leaders can have a positive effect on the mental health of LGBTQ youth. The benefits may be especially pronounced when combined with peer support through group counseling sessions.

More research is needed to determine whether these results are generalizable to other religious traditions and cultures.

It remains unclear how to best promote acceptance within conservative communities that do not tolerate homosexuality. Nonetheless, this study offers hope for improving the well-being of LGBTQ young people within faith contexts that have historically been hostile toward them.

How does exposure to affirming versus non-affirming religious leaders affect mental health outcomes in LGBTQ adolescents?

The research conducted by Dr. Smith et al. (2019) investigated the impact of exposure to affirming versus non-affirming religious leaders on the mental health outcomes of LGBTQ adolescents. The study revealed that adolescents who had access to affirming religious leaders demonstrated lower levels of depression and anxiety than those who did not. Furthermore, the study indicated that these positive effects were independent of sexual orientation and gender identity.
