EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF SPIRITUAL MENTORSHIP ON LGBT YOUTH: HOW SPIRITUALITY CONTRIBUTES TO CONFIDENCE AND RESILIENCE.

2 min read Trans

LGBT adolescents face unique challenges in their development that can affect their mental health, wellbeing, and social interaction. Spiritual mentoring has been shown to offer significant benefits for young people facing these challenges. This study will explore how spiritual mentorship may help foster confidence, moral reasoning, and resilience in LGBT youth.

Adolescence is a critical period for identity formation, and LGBT adolescents are at risk of experiencing disproportionately high rates of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide compared to their heterosexual peers. This study explores how spiritual mentoring can be a protective factor for LGBT youth, promoting self-confidence, moral reasoning, and resilience.

Methodology

This study is a systematic review of existing research examining the relationship between spirituality and outcomes for LGBT youth. Articles were selected based on the following criteria: peer-reviewed journals published within the last ten years, English language articles focused on spirituality as a predictor variable, and samples consisting solely of LGBT individuals aged 13-24.

Results

The results suggest that spiritual mentoring can promote self-confidence by providing emotional support, instilling hope, encouraging positive coping strategies, and affirming personal beliefs. Mentors can also model moral reasoning, helping young people develop values that align with their own beliefs.

Spirituality may enhance resilience through increased access to resources, improved social connections, and reduced stress.

Discussion

These findings have implications for practitioners working with LGBT youth. Spiritual mentorship programs could be implemented in schools or other community settings to provide access to role models who can offer guidance and support. Further research is needed to explore whether these benefits extend beyond adolescence into adulthood and whether they are mediated by factors such as religious affiliation or sexual identity development.

How does spiritual mentorship foster self-confidence, moral reasoning, and resilience in LGBT adolescents?

Spiritual mentorship may play an important role in supporting LGBT adolescents' self-confidence, moral reasoning, and resilience by providing them with a safe and supportive environment where they can explore their identity, values, and beliefs. Mentors can help youth navigate the challenges of growing up as LGBT individuals while also teaching them how to develop a strong sense of self-worth and purpose that transcends any external pressures.
