What is language?
Language is the main tool that people have used to communicate since ancient times. It has evolved dramatically from using sign languages and pictures to written texts and spoken words. Language also changes constantly due to new technologies, cultures, and ways of living.
The word "text" was once used exclusively to refer to books and manuscripts but now it means any form of communication through writing. On the other hand, "fax" used to be a synonym for "copy" before the advent of fax machines. People usually accept these rapid shifts because they are necessary and beneficial for society.
Some linguists argue that this constant change leads to confusion and difficulty for those who don't understand the new terms.
Does language evolution happen naturally?
Most linguistic experts agree that language changes naturally as humans create new words, combine existing ones, and eliminate others. This process started long ago when humans began communicating with each other verbally rather than using gestures or body language. The first known writing system appeared in Mesopotamia around 30000 BCE with cuneiform characters carved into clay tablets. As time went by, different civilizations developed their own unique systems until the alphabet became universal after the Roman Empire spread its influence across Europe. In the modern era, globalization has led to many languages mixing together creating new terms such as "smartphone", "email", "hashtag", etc. All these terms were born out of necessity as technology changed our lives drastically.
How does technology affect language?
Technology plays an important role in changing language since it creates new concepts that require new terms.
"computer" was coined during World War II when people needed to describe computers used for code-breaking while "Internet" was invented in the 1960s for the network connecting military researchers. Today, we have many more technologies like artificial intelligence, virtual reality, blockchain, cryptocurrency, and social media which all need specific terminology to define them accurately. Without proper definitions, it would be impossible to discuss these topics properly. Thus, society should accept rapid shifts in terminology because they reflect our evolving world and help us communicate better.
