UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF RELIGION ON COPING STRATEGIES AMONG LGBT YOUTH.

2 min read Trans

LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. These individuals are often subject to discrimination and prejudice based on their identities and sexual orientation. Religious beliefs also play an important role in how society treats these individuals and influence their ability to cope with stigma. This paper will explore how religiously framed teachings about morality and virtue shape coping strategies and identity negotiation among LGBT youth.

The Bible, Quran, and other religious texts contain passages that condemn homosexuality and other forms of non-heteronormative behavior. As a result, many LGBT youth struggle with feelings of guilt and shame due to these teachings. They may feel alienated from their families, friends, and communities, leading to psychological distress and increased risk of suicide. In addition, some religious institutions promote conversion therapy or exorcisms to 'cure' LGBT individuals of their sexuality, further exacerbating these negative effects.

In response to this stigma, LGBT youth develop various coping strategies to navigate their identities. Some seek support from affirming faith communities or create their own spiritual practices outside of traditional religion. Others choose to ignore or reject religious teachings altogether.

Such coping mechanisms can be difficult to sustain over time, especially if they conflict with core values and beliefs.

Religiously framed teachings about morality and virtue also shape the way LGBT youth negotiate their identities.

Many LGBT people are taught that they must suppress their desires for same-sex relationships in order to remain faithful to God or tradition. This can lead to internalized homophobia and self-hatred, which can cause even more psychological distress. It can also lead to attempts to fit into strict gender roles and expectations to please others, potentially harming their mental health and wellbeing.

Religiously framed teachings about morality and virtue have significant impacts on how LGBT youth cope with prejudice and stigma. By understanding these influences, we can better support LGBT individuals and help them find healing and acceptance within themselves and their communities.

How do religiously framed teachings about morality and virtue shape coping strategies and identity negotiation among LGBT youth?

Religiously framed teachings about morality and virtue are known to influence coping strategies and identity negotiations among LGBT youth by promoting negative attitudes towards sexual orientation and gender nonconformity while at the same time reinforcing heteronormative and cisgendered norms of behavior and appearance. This can result in feelings of shame, guilt, anxiety, and depression as well as a sense of alienation from both their families and communities.
