These stories create certain expectations regarding how men and women should act during love-making sessions, what they should wear, whether they should initiate intimacy or wait for permission, who has more responsibility in bed, if it is acceptable to have casual encounters, and other issues. The most common messages are that females must be submissive and passive while males must assert themselves and take charge. Women should be beautiful, sexy, and attractive, while men should be strong, masculine, successful, dominant, and active.
These narratives influence how individuals perceive themselves as well as others. They can affect self-esteem and confidence levels, leading to anxiety, shame, guilt, or fear of rejection.
