SEXUALITY, IDENTITY, AND TRAUMA: THE ROLE OF THERAPY, SUPPORT GROUPS, AND VIDEO GAMES

2 min read Trans

The effects of discrimination due to one's gender identity or expression are widespread across the globe. Homophobia, transphobia, cultural erasure, and migration can have devastating consequences for individuals and communities alike.

New therapeutic, community and technological systems may provide hope for healing this trauma. These systems can leverage digital communities, global diasporas, and culturally specific practices to create an environment that is more inclusive and supportive.

One such system is teletherapy, which allows individuals to receive therapy from a distance. Teletherapy has been found to be effective in treating trauma related to homophobia, transphobia, and cultural erasure. This approach allows those who live in areas where access to mental health services is limited to connect with qualified professionals without having to leave their homes.

Teletherapy offers privacy and discretion for those who may feel unsafe disclosing their sexuality or gender identity in person.

Another system is online support groups. These groups allow individuals to connect with others who share similar experiences and offer peer support. Online support groups can also provide resources and information on topics like coming out, transitioning, and navigating homophobic or transphobic environments. Many of these groups are available in multiple languages, making them accessible to people from diverse backgrounds.

Technology can also play a role in healing through platforms like video games. Games like "Mass Effect" and "Life Is Strange" feature characters who identify as LGBTQ+, providing players with the opportunity to explore issues of identity and belonging.

Many video games now include options for customizing avatars' appearance and gender, allowing players to express themselves freely.

In addition to therapeutic and technological systems, community-based programs can also help heal trauma.

Queer youth centers provide safe spaces for LGBTQ+ youth to socialize and find acceptance. Similarly, drag performance groups create a space for transgender women to express themselves creatively and build self-esteem.

As technology advances, new forms of therapy and community-building will emerge that leverage digital communities, global diasporas, and culturally specific practices. By creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome and supported, we can work towards a world free of discrimination based on gender identity or expression.
