SEXUALITY AND IDENTITY DISCLOSURE: YOUNG PEOPLES EXPERIENCES WITH COMING OUT IN A HETERONORMATIVE CULTURE enIT FR DE PL PT RU AR JA CN ES

There has been an increasing recognition that the experience of coming out as LGBTQ+ is often fraught with difficulties for many young people.

Little research has been done to explore how this process varies across cultures and societies. This study aimed to investigate how the fear of social exclusion shapes the ways queer adolescents navigate identity disclosure in different cultural contexts.

We conducted interviews with ten queer teenagers from various backgrounds who had recently come out. We asked them about their experiences, including the challenges they faced, strategies they used to deal with those challenges, and how culture played a role in their decision-making process.

The participants reported feeling intense pressure to conform to gender norms and heteronormativity, which made it difficult for them to feel comfortable expressing their sexuality. They also described experiencing bullying and harassment at school due to their identities. Many of them felt alone and isolated, leading them to avoid public spaces where they might be judged or ostracized. Some also expressed concern about losing family support if they came out.

Some participants found solace in online communities, where they could connect with other queer individuals and receive emotional support. Others found strength in family members who were accepting and open-minded. Despite these positive experiences, the majority of our interviewees still reported feeling anxious and scared when thinking about future interactions with friends, classmates, and teachers.

Our findings suggest that the fear of social exclusion plays a significant role in shaping how queer adolescents navigate identity disclosure. While some may be able to find support systems within their immediate environment, others are forced to rely on online communities or develop coping mechanisms to manage their anxiety. This research highlights the need for more inclusive educational environments and community resources that can help young people explore their identities safely and comfortably.

How does the fear of social exclusion shape the ways queer adolescents navigate identity disclosure in different cultural contexts?

Fear of social exclusion can be an important factor for many individuals who are still coming to terms with their gender and sexuality identities. Queer adolescents may have experienced negative responses from their family, peers, and society as they explore and disclose their identities, which can lead them to feel isolated and rejected. This can make it challenging for them to find support systems and seek out resources that would help them better understand themselves and connect with others.
