Characters who were gay were typically presented as effeminate, flamboyant, and prone to violence or suicide. This type of portrayal served to reinforce negative stereotypes about queer people, leading many viewers to believe that they were deviant and dangerous. This does not mean that all media portrayals of queer people have been positive.

As such, while there have certainly been steps forward in terms of media representation, there is still much work to be done when it comes to ensuring that all members of the community feel seen and heard.
