SEXUAL ORIENTATION ISNT A CHOICE: HOW TO RESPECT AND SUPPORT LGBTQ+ ELDERS

2 min read Lesbian

1. Many people assume that homosexuality is an illness to be cured or suppressed. As a result, many members of the LGBTQ+ community hide their identity because they feel ashamed and uncomfortable revealing it to others. This has led to a lack of understanding and acceptance within society which can lead to discrimination against them.

2. In some cultures, being gay is considered immoral, sinful, or even criminal.

In Uganda, homosexuality is punishable by life imprisonment. In other parts of Africa such as Nigeria and Zimbabwe, same-sex marriage is illegal and carries a maximum penalty of 14 years' imprisonment.

3. Homophobic attitudes are also prevalent among healthcare providers. Some doctors refuse to provide services to LGBTQ+ patients out of religious beliefs or personal values. Even if they provide care, they may fail to address their specific needs related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

4. Healthcare workers may assume heterosexuality when interacting with LGBTQ+ seniors. They may use terms like "husband" or "wife" without considering the patient's identity. This can create confusion and distress for the patient.

5. Social service agencies often require proof of relationship status before providing services to couples. If two women want to share a room at an assisted living facility, staff may ask for documentation that proves their relationship status. This can be difficult if one partner is not legally recognized as the other's spouse.

6. Because they are invisible, LGBTQ+ seniors have less access to social support than their straight counterparts. This means they are more likely to experience isolation, loneliness, depression, and anxiety. They may avoid seeking help due to fear of discrimination or rejection.

7. To meet ethical responsibilities in healthcare and social services, we must recognize the existence of LGBTQ+ seniors and work towards creating inclusive policies and practices. We need to train staff on how to interact with this population respectfully and sensitively.

How does societal invisibility of LGBTQ+ seniors influence ethical responsibilities in healthcare and social services?

Societal invisibility is when individuals are not recognized by society, which can lead to them being excluded from certain opportunities and discriminated against. For LGBTQ+ seniors, this can mean they are unable to access necessary medical care, social support networks, and other resources due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.
