Is Global LGBTQ+ Advocacy Truly Universal or Shaped By Geopolitical Agendas?
LGBTQ+ advocacy refers to activism for the rights of individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, or any other sexual identity that does not conform to societal norms. This has been an increasingly prevalent movement globally, but its reach and effectiveness can be questioned due to geopolitical agendas. In this essay, I will explore how global LGBTQ+ advocacy is shaped by geopolitical agendas rather than being truly universal.
Geopolitics is the study of international relations between states and their interactions with each other in terms of power, resources, ideologies, and economic interests. The influence of geopolitics on LGBTQ+ advocacy can be seen through various countries' policies towards LGBTQ+ rights, which often reflect larger political and economic interests.
