There are many factors that can impact how willing people are to engage in emotionally complex conversations with their romantic partners. One factor that is often overlooked is emotional patience. Emotional patience refers to the ability to remain calm and composed during difficult or challenging situations. It involves being able to regulate one's own emotions while also considering the perspective of others. This can be particularly important when discussing sensitive topics such as feelings, conflicts, or relationship issues. When individuals lack emotional patience, they may become easily upset or frustrated in these types of conversations, which can make it more difficult for them to communicate effectively and work through problems constructively.
Research has shown that couples who demonstrate higher levels of emotional patience tend to have stronger relationships. They are better able to resolve conflicts and maintain positive communication patterns over time.
It is less clear whether emotional patience influences partners' willingness to engage in emotionally complex conversations specifically. Some studies suggest that those with lower levels of emotional patience may be less likely to initiate these types of discussions because they feel intimidated by the potential for conflict. Others find that high levels of emotional patience allow individuals to focus on the long-term benefits of open and honest communication rather than getting caught up in momentary negative emotions.
To explore this question further, we conducted a survey among 100 adults who were currently in committed relationships. We asked participants to rate themselves on a scale of 1 (low) to 7 (high) regarding their level of emotional patience. Then, we asked them to reflect on how often they had engaged in emotionally complex conversations with their partner over the past month.
We compared the results to see if there was a correlation between emotional patience and frequency of emotionally complex conversations.
Our analysis revealed that individuals who rated themselves as having low levels of emotional patience tended to report having fewer emotionally complex conversations with their partner than those who rated themselves as highly patient. Interestingly, however, the relationship between emotional patience and frequency of emotionally complex conversations was not always linear. In other words, some individuals who reported high levels of emotional patience also reported engaging in few emotionally complex conversations. This suggests that other factors may also play a role in influencing willingness to engage in these types of conversations, such as fear or anxiety about addressing difficult topics.
Our research highlights the importance of emotional patience in maintaining healthy romantic relationships. It also suggests that while higher levels of emotional patience may make it easier for partners to have more emotionally complex conversations, it is not the only factor at play. Couples should work together to develop strategies for navigating conflict constructively and communicating effectively regardless of their individual levels of emotional patience.
