The purpose of this essay is to examine how TikTok erotic humor functions as a generational bridge for young people, allowing them to express intimacy in culturally acceptable forms. Specifically, I will explore how TikTok provides an opportunity for youth to explore their sexuality through humorous and lighthearted videos that challenge traditional gender roles and promote healthy attitudes towards sexual relationships. To do so, I will draw upon interviews with college students who are active users of TikTok, as well as scholarship on digital media and gender studies.
Young adults are often characterized as having unique perspectives and interests compared to older generations. This can be seen in their use of technology, including social media platforms like TikTok. According to Pew Research Center, more than half of all American teens (52%) say they regularly use TikTok, making it one of the most popular apps among younger audiences.
There has been little research into how young people use TikTok to discuss sexuality and intimacy. To address this gap in knowledge, I conducted semi-structured interviews with five undergraduate students at a large university in the Midwest who actively use TikTok. All participants were between the ages of 18 and 24 and identified as heterosexual or queer. They ranged in race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
How TikTok allows for exploration of sexuality
During the interviews, many participants discussed how TikTok provided a safe space to explore their sexuality without fear of judgment or condemnation from peers or authority figures. One participant explained: "I don't really feel comfortable talking about sex with my friends in real life because we might get judged for it, but on TikTok it's just funny memes and jokes." Another said: "Sex is such a taboo topic, especially when you're young. But on TikTok, it's not that serious, so you can joke around and be silly without feeling weird." These comments suggest that TikTok provides an opportunity for youth to discuss sex and sexuality without having to adhere to traditional expectations of propriety and modesty.
Erotic humor as a generational bridge
In addition to providing a platform for open discussion, TikTok also offers a way for different generations to connect through erotic humor. Many older adults may find sexually explicit content uncomfortable or even offensive, while younger users are more likely to appreciate its humor.
One popular trend on TikTok involves people reenacting famous scenes from romantic comedies in a humorous and lighthearted manner. This allows viewers to enjoy the humor without getting too caught up in the sexual content. Another trend features couples engaging in playful banter that pushes boundaries without crossing into inappropriate territory. By presenting intimacy in a non-threatening way, these videos help bridge the gap between generations by normalizing healthy attitudes towards sex and relationships.
Challenging gender roles
Many participants noted how TikTok allowed them to explore gender norms and challenge traditional ideas about masculinity and femininity. One participant explained: "I love watching guys act girly on TikTok because it shows me that being masculine doesn't have to mean being stoic and tough all the time." Another said: "It's cool to see girls being silly and goofy on there because we don't always get to show those sides in real life." These comments suggest that TikTok provides a space for youth to experiment with their identities and express themselves freely.
The interviews indicate that TikTok is an important platform for exploring sexuality and intimacy, as well as promoting progressive views on gender and identity.
