Such conflicts often arise when people are forced to conform to societal expectations despite their personal preferences and beliefs. Internalized cultural and religious norms define what is acceptable behavior regarding sexuality and gender roles in society.

Some cultures may view homosexuality as unnatural or immoral, while others consider it taboo. Similarly, certain religions may dictate strict gender roles that can lead to conflicts within an individual's identity if they do not align with their natural inclinations.

These conflicts can cause significant psychological distress, leading to feelings of shame, guilt, anxiety, and depression. They can also impact one's relationships, self-esteem, and overall wellbeing.

Reconciliation between sexual and gender identities and internalized cultural and religious norms is possible through several mechanisms.
