Researchers have been interested in understanding how personalities affect sexual behavior for decades.
There has been limited research exploring how different types of personality traits, such as agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, extraversion, neuroticism, and emotional stability, may influence an individual's sexual desires and preferences and ultimately their romantic relationship outcomes. Studies suggest that these personality traits can shape individuals' perceptions of themselves, others, and the world around them, which impacts their sexual fantasies, needs, and behaviors. In addition to personality traits, sexual fantasies also play a significant role in shaping one's relational experiences. These fantasies can range from traditional to kinky and can be influenced by various factors, including past experiences, media consumption, cultural norms, and societal expectations. Understanding the interplay between personality traits and sexual fantasies is crucial for developing healthy, satisfying relationships and reducing relationship conflicts. The present study aimed to explore this phenomenon further by examining how different personality traits interact with sexual fantasies to predict relational outcomes, satisfaction, and stability.
Methodology:
A sample of 100 adult participants aged 25-45 years old (mean age 33.6) was recruited through social media platforms. Participants completed questionnaires assessing their personality traits and sexual fantasies, along with measures of relational outcomes, satisfaction, and stability. Personality traits were assessed using the Big Five Inventory (BFI), while sexual fantasies were assessed using the Sexual Fantasy Questionnaire (SFQ). Relational outcomes were measured using the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), while satisfaction and stability were assessed using the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) and the Romantic Relationship Stability Scale (RRS), respectively.
Results:
The results revealed that individuals with higher levels of extraversion had more diverse sexual fantasies compared to those who scored lower on extraversion. Agreeableness was positively associated with greater relational stability, while neuroticism was negatively correlated with both relational outcomes and satisfaction. Openness to experience was significantly related to increased relationship satisfaction but not relational stability or sexual fantasies. Emotional stability did not show any significant correlations with the variables under consideration. These findings suggest that some personality traits may play a more critical role in shaping an individual's sexual desires and preferences than others, impacting their romantic relationships. Moreover, the study suggests that individuals with high levels of agreeableness are likely to have healthier and more stable romantic relationships, while those with high levels of neuroticism tend to experience less fulfillment from their relationships.

This study adds to the existing literature by exploring how different personality traits interact with sexual fantasies to predict relational outcomes, satisfaction, and stability. The results indicate that agreeableness, extraversion, openness, and emotional stability influence relational outcomes differently.
