FOSTERING POSITIVE SELFESTEEM AND SAFE SPACES FOR QUEER YOUTH enIT FR DE PL PT RU AR JA CN ES

2 min read Queer

LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual/aromantic, plus others) people have faced oppression and discrimination for centuries, often resulting in their experiences of shame, secrecy, social isolation, fear, depression, violence, and suicide. For young adults, this can lead to significant challenges in identity development, including feeling like they don't fit in, are unwanted, or that their lives will be cut short due to external forces. This can make it difficult to find supportive communities and foster positive self-esteem.

How can we create safe environments?

One way is through affirmative action programs such as anti-bullying policies, curricula inclusive of diverse identities, LGBTQIA+ student groups, and mental health resources. Another approach is providing education about gender identity, sexual orientation, relationships, and cultural norms related to these topics.

Creating spaces for open dialogue where youth can share experiences and receive validation from peers and mentors can be valuable.

What about online resources?

Online resources can also provide information, tools, and support networks for queer youth who may not have access to other resources. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, Discord, YouTube, and Twitter offer opportunities for connection and knowledge-sharing across geographic distances.

There may be risks associated with using the internet unsupervised, so parents should monitor activity carefully.

Overcoming barriers

In some areas, laws criminalize LGBTQIA+ people and limit their rights, making it more challenging to establish a support system. It is essential for families, friends, educators, religious leaders, politicians, and others to advocate for change at local, national, and global levels to reduce stigma and increase visibility.

Organizations like GLSEN, The Trevor Project, and PFLAG are working to address discrimination and inequality in schools, workplaces, and society.

How can positive identity formation among queer youth be fostered in environments that are socially hostile or unsupportive?

The process of forming one's identity as an LGBTQ individual is complicated and challenging, especially when living in an environment that is hostile or unsupportive towards them. To create a positive identity for themselves, queer youth must have access to supportive and affirmative spaces where they can feel comfortable expressing themselves fully.
