In the Bible, God's presence is often associated with specific places.
The Israelites were told to bring their sacrifices to the tabernacle in Exodus chapter 29. In this case, it was not enough for them to simply offer an animal; they had to do so at a designated location. Likewise, when Moses went up Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments, he had to go there in order to hear from God. Throughout the Scriptures, we find that God communicates best through certain places. The wilderness can be one such place where divine revelation occurs. This idea is especially true when individuals are exiled from their homeland and forced into wilderness settings. The wilderness has been a site of divine revelation throughout history.
During his exile in Babylon, Ezekiel had visions of God (Ezekiel 1:1) while living far away from Jerusalem. Similarly, John the Baptist proclaimed Jesus as the Lamb of God while in the wilderness (John 1:35).

With no distractions like TV or social media, people may be more open to having spiritual experiences. They also have time to meditate on what it means to follow God's will. In addition, the wilderness often evokes feelings of awe and wonderment that can lead people closer to God. Nature reminds us how big and powerful He is. Another reason could be that hardships force people to depend on God for survival. When they face difficulties, they turn to Him for help.
Some believe that the wilderness represents purity because it lacks sinful influences found in urban areas. Thus, exiles who live there may feel closer to God because they are free from temptation.
Not everyone has these experiences in the wilderness. Some individuals do not see any benefit from being there and find themselves feeling distant from God instead. Others may even struggle with loneliness or despair when surrounded by wild animals or inclement weather. It takes courage to endure such situations without losing faith in God. Moreover, many argue that modern conveniences make life easier than ever before, making it difficult to connect with Him through nature. Therefore, while some exiles may experience divine revelation in the wilderness, others may not have similar opportunities. The key factor appears to be one's mindset rather than the environment itself. If someone goes into the wilderness expecting miracles and answers from God, then they may receive them; if not, they likely won't. That said, we should all strive to seek Him regardless of our location or circumstances. After all, God is everywhere and available at any time (Psalms 139:7-8).
