BISEXUAL IDENTITIES AND CHALLENGES: UNDERSTANDING INTERSECTIONS OF RACE, GENDER, SEXUALITY, AND MORE

2 min read Bisexual

Bisexuality is an identity that involves being attracted to both men and women. It can also be defined as having romantic, sexual, and/or emotional attraction towards more than one gender. Bisexual individuals may experience unique challenges due to their intersection with other marginalized identities such as race, class, ethnicity, disability, and socioeconomic status. This intersection can impact the way they navigate society and interact with others.

Intersectionality is the idea that multiple aspects of identity influence each other to shape individual experiences.

A bisexual person who identifies as black and female may face additional discrimination compared to a bisexual white male. They may encounter stereotypes about race, gender, and sexual orientation all at once, which can lead to social isolation, reduced access to resources, and feelings of exclusion.

Bisexuals may struggle to find support from within LGBTQ+ communities if they do not fit neatly into binary categories of gay or straight. Many people assume bisexuality is just a phase or don't take it seriously, causing them to feel invisible or misunderstood. On the other hand, some may identify as queer, pansexual, or polysexual to express fluidity in their sexual attraction beyond binary labels.

This still leaves out non-binary individuals who may be attracted to many genders outside of the traditional definition of bisexuality.

Bisexuality intersects with various cultural norms around masculinity and femininity. Men are often expected to be heterosexual and embody masculine traits, while women are expected to prioritize relationships and motherhood. Bisexual men may experience pressure to conform to these norms or risk being labeled as "unmanly," while bisexual women may face backlash for challenging societal expectations.

Bisexual individuals also have unique needs when it comes to intimacy and dating. They may experience confusion over whether to date someone of the same gender or different genders simultaneously or serially. This confusion can create anxiety and uncertainty about finding acceptance and belonging.

Bisexuals may face discrimination or judgment within the LGBTQ+ community or broader society for their romantic choices.

Bisexuality intersects with multiple identities to influence social and emotional experiences. To support marginalized bisexuals, we must recognize their unique needs and advocate for equal rights and representation across all aspects of life. By embracing intersectionality, we can create a more inclusive world where everyone is valued and celebrated for who they are.

How does bisexuality intersect with other marginalized identities to influence social and emotional experiences?

Bisexuality is often overlooked as an identity among people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA), even though it is one of the most commonly identified sexual orientations in America.
