A GUIDE TO FINDING ACCEPTANCE AS AN LGBT BELIEVER IN A RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION

3 min read Bisexual

When it comes to matters of belief, religion is often seen as an important part of a person's identity.

For individuals who identify as LGBT+ and also have strong religious convictions, navigating dual identities can be challenging. Many major religions, such as Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and Hinduism, have scriptures that explicitly condemn homosexuality, bisexuality, transgenderism, and queerness in general. This can create a sense of cognitive dissonance for believers who struggle to reconcile their faith with their gender identity or sexual orientation. In this article, I will explore how some LGBT believers navigate this tension by discussing strategies they use to cope with doctrinal condemnation in their religious institutions.

One common strategy employed by LGBT believers is to seek out more progressive religious communities. These congregations may not necessarily accept LGBT+ members openly but may offer a greater degree of tolerance than mainstream denominations. Some churches and synagogues are actively working towards becoming more inclusive, which means that there may be places where LGBT+ people can feel welcome without being forced to hide their true selves.

The Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) was founded specifically to provide a safe space for LGBT+ Christians. The MCC has over 40 affiliate congregations around the world and welcomes everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Another strategy involves finding ways to reinterpret religious texts in order to make them more accepting of LGBT+ identities. Some believers interpret certain verses about same-sex relationships as metaphorical rather than literal, while others emphasize love and compassion as central tenets of their faith. Others still read passages through the lens of social justice and advocacy, using them to promote equality and inclusion within their communities. By doing so, LGBT+ believers can find solace in their faith even if it doesn't fully affirm their sexuality or gender identity.

Many LGBT+ believers simply choose to ignore doctrinal condemnation altogether. They focus on living their lives according to their own values and beliefs, rather than trying to reconcile their religion with their identity. This can be a difficult choice, as it often requires ignoring or downplaying important parts of one's faith.

For some individuals, this is the only way they can maintain both their religious and LGBT+ identities simultaneously.

Navigating dual identities as an LGBT+ believer can be challenging but not impossible. By seeking out progressive communities, reinterpreting scripture, and/or choosing to ignore doctrinal condemnation, LGBT+ believers can find a sense of belonging and fulfillment in their spiritual journey. While there is no easy solution, these strategies can provide much-needed support during times of conflict and confusion.

How do LGBT believers navigate dual identities when facing doctrinal condemnation in religious institutions?

LGBT people who have religious beliefs may find it difficult to reconcile their sexual orientation with their faith due to the doctrines of their religious institution that explicitly condemns homosexuality as sinful. This can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, isolation, and rejection, both from within their community and without.
