One study conducted among 209 workers in a technology company found out that those who were involved in sexual relationships reported higher levels of cohesiveness than those who did not engage in such. The participants explained that having physical intimacy with co-workers made them feel emotionally connected, which helped them bond as friends. This emotional closeness allowed them to understand each other better and hence work well together.
When sexual relations occur outside the team, such as in a romantic relationship, they tend to affect the group negatively. In a survey involving 174 employees from various companies, researchers found out that romantic relationships within the same team led to tension among other members. They argued that these kinds of sexual relationships created jealousy and envy among peers, making the group less effective. Some even went ahead to call for dismissal of any member engaged in an office romance.
It should be noted that all types of sexual relationships do not necessarily have adverse effects on group dynamics. A study of three sports teams (football, baseball, and basketball) indicated that couples who played in the same team did not cause problems like those in other settings. The respondents said that they understood that their partners would always come first, and thus there was no need to get too close or competitive with them. These responses suggest that mutual respect and understanding are vital for healthy sexual relationships in the workplace.
