WHAT IS RELIGIOUS SEXUAL SOCIALIZATION AND HOW DOES IT IMPACT OUR LIVES?

3 min read Theology

Religious sexual socialization refers to the ways in which individuals are taught about sex and sexuality within their respective religious traditions. This includes both explicit teachings and implicit messages conveyed through stories, rituals, and cultural norms. It also encompasses how people understand their own bodies, sexual desires, and behaviors in relation to these beliefs. Religions vary widely in terms of their views on sex, from condemning it entirely to encouraging it for procreation only.

Even those that have more permissive attitudes towards sexual activity often emphasize traditional gender roles and restrictive ideas about what is acceptable behavior.

The impact of religious sexual socialization can be significant across the lifespan.

Children may internalize messages that suggest they should wait until marriage to engage in sexual activity, leading them to feel shame if they experience sexual desire before then. Adults may struggle to reconcile their faith with their desires and feelings, causing conflict or repression. As people age, they may find themselves facing health concerns related to sexual functioning, such as erectile dysfunction or vaginal dryness, which can lead to further stress and anxiety.

Emotional flexibility refers to one's ability to respond appropriately to changing circumstances and emotional states. When someone has low emotional flexibility, they may become overly rigid in their thinking and reactivity, having difficulty adapting to new situations or coping with difficult ones. People who grow up in highly restrictive religious environments may lack this flexibility, making it challenging to navigate life outside of their community or deal with unexpected changes.

Relational flexibility relates to one's capacity to form and maintain relationships with others. This includes both romantic partnerships and friendships, family connections, and professional networks. Those who have been socialized within a strict religious framework may find it challenging to establish boundaries, communicate effectively, and resolve conflicts without resorting to punitive measures. They may also struggle to balance their own needs and desires with those of their partner or other relationships.

Erotic flexibility refers to an individual's open-mindedness towards various forms of erotic expression, including solo masturbation, group sex, kinky activities, non-monogamy, or BDSM. Religious teachings often emphasize heteronormative, monogamous, procreative sex within marriage, which can make exploring alternative expressions of desire taboo or even forbidden. Therefore, people raised within these communities may feel shame about their own desires or fear rejection if they express them. This can result in sexual avoidance, dissatisfaction, or even abuse.

The way that individuals are taught about sex and sexuality within their religious traditions shapes how they understand themselves and their relationships throughout their lives. Emotional, relational, and erotic flexibility are all affected by this socialization, making it essential for mental health providers to consider when working with clients from diverse backgrounds.
