UNDERSTANDING YOUNG ADULTS PERCEPTIONS OF PREMARITAL SEXUAL BEHAVIOR AND RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES IN GEORGIA

The article focuses on how Georgian religious norms impact young adults' perception of premarital sexual behavior and relationship responsibilities. While religion plays an essential role in shaping sexual attitudes and behaviors, there is limited research exploring this issue among young people in Georgia. This study sought to examine how young adults view premarital sexual norms and their relationship responsibilities within the context of different religions.

A survey was conducted among young adults aged between 18 and 29 years in Tbilisi, Georgia. The sample size comprised 50 individuals who identified themselves as either Christian Orthodox, Muslim, Catholic, or Hindu. Participants were asked about their views on premarital sex, monogamy, and responsibility towards partners. They also answered questions related to their level of religiosity and frequency of church attendance.

The results showed that while all participants agreed that premarital sex was wrong, they varied in their opinions regarding its severity. Christian Orthodox respondents believed it was the most severe sin while Muslim respondents saw no moral implications associated with it. Similarly, those who attended church regularly felt more negatively toward premarital sex than others. Religious beliefs appeared to play a significant role in influencing these attitudes.

When it came to relational responsibilities, there was greater agreement across all groups. All respondents stated that it was crucial to be faithful and honest with one's partner before marriage. There was also consensus that breaking up after having sex before marriage would reflect poorly on both parties involved. These findings suggest that Georgian religious norms may impact young adults' perceptions of sexual ethics but not necessarily relationship responsibilities.

This study highlights the importance of understanding the complex interplay between religion and sexual behavior among young people in Georgia. It provides valuable insights into how religious beliefs influence attitudes and behaviors surrounding premarital sex and relationships.

How do Georgian religious norms influence young adults' understanding of premarital sexual ethics and relational responsibility?

Georgian religion is characterized by strict adherence to conservative norms that discourage premarital sex and promiscuity. Young adults are expected to abstain from any physical intimacy until marriage, as it is seen as unacceptable behaviour that goes against cultural values and norms.
