UNDERSTANDING WHY PARENTS LACK OF GUIDANCE AFFECTS TEENAGE SEXUAL DECISIONMAKING

Adolescence is an important stage for understanding one's sexuality and making informed decisions about sex.

Many teens face difficulties when it comes to navigating this stage due to a lack of guidance or open communication about their feelings and desires. In fact, research suggests that most parents do not discuss emotional readiness with their children before engaging in sexual activities, which can result in negative consequences such as STDs, unplanned pregnancies, and low self-esteem.

In this essay, I will explore how a lack of guidance or discussion about emotional readiness impacts adolescent sexual decision-making. Specifically, I will examine three major themes related to this topic: Emotional Readiness, Physiological Maturation, and Social Pressures. These factors play a significant role in determining whether or not adolescents are prepared to make responsible decisions about sex.

Emotional Readiness refers to the psychological state of individuals who have reached puberty and are capable of expressing themselves emotionally during sexual interactions. Teenagers should feel comfortable with their bodies, understand consent, be able to communicate effectively, and recognize safe practices. Unfortunately, few parents talk to their kids about these things, leading to increased risk-taking behavior among young people.

Physiological Maturation describes physical changes that occur during adolescence that may affect sexual decision-making. The brain develops faster than the body during this period, resulting in impulsive choices and lack of awareness regarding risks associated with sex.

Hormonal fluctuations increase sexual urges, making teens more vulnerable to pressure from peers or partners.

Social Pressure is a crucial factor influencing adolescent sexuality. Peer pressure, media influences, and societal norms often encourage early initiation into sexual activities, which can lead to unhealthy behaviors such as premature intercourse and unwanted pregnancies. To mitigate these risks, families need to discuss healthy relationships and boundaries to help adolescents make informed decisions.

Without guidance or open communication about emotional readiness, adolescents struggle to make informed decisions about sex, leading to negative outcomes for both them and society at large. Parents must take responsibility by engaging in dialogue with their children about emotional development before allowing them to engage in sexual activities.

How does lack of guidance or discussion about emotional readiness impact adolescent sexual decision-making?

The lack of guidance and discussion about emotional readiness can have a significant impact on adolescent sexual decisions. Without proper knowledge and preparation, teenagers may find themselves making choices that they regret later on in life. This could lead to unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and even mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
