UNDERSTANDING UNCONSCIOUS SCRIPTS IN ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH RELIGIOUS NARRATIVES

2 min read Theology

Religious stories are often seen as a means of teaching morality and ethics to followers.

They can also convey unconscious scripts about desire that shape our understanding of what is desirable or taboo in sexual and romantic relationships. This article explores how certain religious narratives portray love, attraction, and pleasure, and how these messages influence our own expectations and behaviors.

The concept of "unconscious script" refers to the ideas and beliefs that we absorb from our cultural environment without actively thinking about them. These scripts inform our understanding of appropriate behavior and values, but may not always reflect reality or serve our best interests. In terms of desire, unconscious scripts can range from the benign to the harmful.

Some people internalize messages about sexual promiscuity being sinful, leading to feelings of shame and guilt around their desires. Others may accept gender roles that limit their options for sexual expression, such as men only being allowed to pursue women or women needing to be submissive.

In religious storytelling, these messages often take the form of tales involving characters struggling with temptation or expressing forbidden desires.

The biblical story of Adam and Eve shows how eating from the Tree of Knowledge led to humanity's downfall, suggesting that seeking knowledge or experiencing pleasure outside of God's will leads to suffering. Similarly, Hindu mythology includes stories of gods and goddesses who engage in lustful acts with each other, but ultimately face punishment or tragedy due to their actions.

These stories suggest that desire itself is inherently dangerous, and must be controlled or suppressed. They also create an association between sex and sin, which has negative consequences for individuals seeking fulfillment in healthy ways.

They reinforce traditional gender roles by portraying men as dominant and women as passive, thus restricting both genders in their ability to explore their sexuality fully.

Despite these limitations, many followers still find inspiration and comfort in religious texts. By studying them closely, we can learn more about our own desires and how they intersect with cultural norms. We might also begin to question the validity of certain unconscious scripts, particularly those that lead to harm or exclusion.

It's up to us to identify and challenge these narratives, creating a more inclusive and positive understanding of love, attraction, and intimacy.
