LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and other identities that do not conform to traditional gender norms. These individuals often face discrimination, harassment, and violence based on their identities, which can lead to isolation and mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. In this essay, I will explore how public visibility of LGBTQ+ identity intersects with ethical theories of honesty, responsibility, and social duty.
Honesty
Honest communication about one's sexual orientation is essential because it allows others to understand who they are dealing with and helps create an inclusive environment where everyone feels accepted regardless of their gender identity or expression.
If someone identifies as nonbinary but uses she/her pronouns, being honest about their preferred pronouns can help avoid misgendering and make them feel more comfortable around others.
Coming out can also be difficult due to fear of rejection from family members, friends, or co-workers. Some people may choose to remain closeted to protect themselves from discrimination or even physical harm. In these situations, it can be challenging to determine whether it is better to prioritize personal safety or moral obligations towards others by being open about one's identity.
Responsibility
As a member of society, every individual has a responsibility to contribute to the well-being of others, including those in the LGBTQ+ community. This means acknowledging and accepting differences without judgement or prejudice while working towards creating a safe space for all people. It involves recognizing that each person has unique needs and perspectives that should be respected, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Some individuals may prefer not to share personal information about their relationships, and that choice should be respected rather than pressured into disclosing details that could compromise their privacy.
Social duty
Social duty refers to our obligation to uphold societal norms and values, which includes supporting marginalized groups like the LGBTQ+ community. By showing up for Pride parades, attending events celebrating queer culture, and advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, we demonstrate our commitment to inclusion and equality.
It is also important to recognize that there are cultural differences between countries and communities regarding acceptance of nontraditional identities. While progress has been made globally, much work remains to be done before everyone feels accepted and supported.
