UNDERSTANDING THE INFLUENCE OF RELIGION ON INTIMACY AND EROTIC EXPRESSION IN DIGITAL AUTHORITARIAN ENVIRONMENTS

Sexuality is an important part of human existence that shapes individuals' lives, affecting their emotional, physical, social, cultural, and spiritual wellbeing. Sexual practices are diverse, and people express themselves differently through various forms of touching, kissing, hugging, holding hands, etc., based on their belief systems. In contemporary times, the internet has influenced how people interact socially, including interpersonal intimacy. While some governments promote freedom of expression, others have developed digital authoritarian environments where citizens cannot access certain websites or apps without censorship. This paper looks at the influence of religion on sexual autonomy, relational decision-making, and erotic expression in digital authoritarian environments. The analysis explores how religion impacts these aspects of life, especially for women, LGBTQ+ groups, and non-heterosexuals who are often marginalized and discriminated against. It also examines how digital authorities mediate these interactions to maintain social order.

Religious Belief Systems

Different religions have varying views regarding sex.

Islamic teachings allow marital sex between consenting adults within marriage but prohibit premarital or extramarital sex. Christianity advocates for abstinence before marriage but allows sexual relations after marriage. On the other hand, Buddhism promotes celibacy and non-attachment. Hinduism allows married couples to enjoy sex while remaining faithful to one partner. Some religious leaders believe God made humans to procreate, and therefore any form of contraception is unacceptable.

Digital Authoritarian Environments

Digital authoritarian states monitor online activities, censor information, control public communication, manipulate news, surveil residents, and punish dissenters. China, Russia, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt are prime examples of such countries that use digital technologies to reinforce traditional norms, values, and beliefs about gender roles, including sexuality. They deploy various methods like blocking access to some websites, creating virtual armies of state trolls, manipulating algorithms, controlling cybersecurity infrastructure, and restricting connectivity. These measures make it challenging for citizens to express themselves freely on sexual matters.

Sexual Autonomy

In digital authoritarian environments, religious institutions influence the way people think about sexual autonomy. People may lack freedom to choose partners and explore their sexuality due to fear of punishment by religious or government authorities.

In Muslim countries, women cannot refuse sex from husbands since the Quran permits men to force their wives if they deny intimacy. In Islamic cultures, a woman's virginity is essential for marriageability, hence forced marriages often occur before adulthood. Women may also be pressured into having children even though they do not want them. In Christian societies, premarital sex can lead to expulsion from schools, jobs, churches, or communities.

Relational Decision-Making

Religious beliefs dictate how individuals decide whom to date or marry. Some faiths forbid mixed relationships while others permit them. Members who fail to follow these rules risk excommunication, social isolation, or physical harm.

In China, parents who arrange marriages between non-Han Chinese and Han Chinese face criminal charges.

In Saudi Arabia, interracial marriages are legal but must be approved by clerics. In addition, some religions encourage arranged marriages which limit one's choice of partner.

Erotic Expression

Digital authoritarianism restricts erotic expression by blocking access to certain websites, apps, and platforms that promote pornography or other forms of sexual content. Religious institutions support this censorship, claiming it protects society's moral values. Consequently, people may lack avenues through which they could explore their sexuality and express themselves freely. This situation leads to frustration and anxiety among those seeking alternative expressions of love, affection, and intimacy.

How do digital authoritarian environments mediate the influence of religion on sexual autonomy, relational decision-making, and erotic expression?

"Digital authoritarian environments can have significant impacts on individuals' religious beliefs and practices regarding sexuality. Religious texts often prescribe strict codes of conduct for sexual behavior that are based on traditional gender roles and ideals of purity. In such environments, these rules may be further reinforced by state institutions, law enforcement, and social norms. Individuals who challenge these norms may face pressure from their families and communities.
